What happens during an executive function assessment?

During an executive function assessment, a child or young person would complete a number of puzzles or tasks whilst talking about their learning. The executive function assessment will take place in a room with reduced distractions, meaning that we should be able to gain an accurate representation of executive function.

Which executive function assessments do we use?

The specific executive function assessments used will be chosen based on the child or young person and their needs. The main executive function assessments we use are:

  • BRIEF2 - Behaviour rating inventory of executive function can be used with children and young people aged 5-18 and measures; behavior regulation, emotion regulation, and cognitive regulation
  • NEPSY - A neuropsychological development assessment which measures; executive functioning, attention, memory and learning, sensorimotor functioning, visuospatial processing
  • BADS-C - Behavioural assessment of the dysexecutive syndrome in children measures aspects of the dysexecutive syndrome, including; inflexibility and perseveration, novel problem solving, impulsivity, planning, moderating behaviour based on feedback
  • D-KEFS - Delis-Kaplan executive function system® can be used on individuals aged 8 or over and it measures; flexibility of thinking, inhibition, problem solving, planning, impulse control, concept formation, abstract thinking and creativity
  • CAS2 - Cognitive assessment system measures the following areas; planning, attention, simultaneous, successive and ineffectiveness
  • WPPSI-IV - Wechsler preschool and primary scale of intelligence when used in relation to executive functioning can measure; visual spatial, working memory, fluid reasoning, processing speed, non-verbal and general ability
  • WMRS - Working memory rating scale can be used for the early identification of working memory difficulties which would impact learning on ages 5-11
  • Conners-3 - The Conners-3 measures; executive functioning, learning problems, schoolwork / grades, and includes a ten item ADHD index
  • WAIS-IV - Wechsler adult intelligence scale can measure; reasoning, retention of information, processing information, organisation of information, verbal comprehension

There may be alternative assessments and methods to assess executive function and these will be discussed before the assessment takes place if necessary.

What happens after an executive function assessment?

Following an executive function assessment we will be able to provide detailed information about a child or young person’s executive functioning. This information will include areas of strengths and difficulties, which can be used to support with learning. We provide follow up services to offer constructive support.

Does an executive function assessment come with a report?

We offer a variety of reports for an executive function assessment. A bespoke report is available which can vary based on length or purpose. Read more about the types of reports we can provide.

Executive functioning can impact a broad range of areas which is why an accurate assessment can help to identify areas of strength and difficulties. Understanding these areas can help to put structured support into place to help children and young people to become happy, safe and ready for life’s challenges.
