Phonological assessments

A phonological assessment looks at the speech sounds a child or young person makes. This assessment looks at the building blocks for effective speech, language and communication.

Who is suitable for a phonological assessment?

There can be a number of underlying reasons why a child or young person would be suitable for a phonological assessment. The most common characteristics for underlying reasons include:

To arrange an initial discussion, or to find out more about phonological assessments then please contact us.

What are the benefits of a phonological assessment?

The benefits of a phonological assessment come from the following:

A phonological assessment by a clinical or educational psychologist provides additional information which a speech and language therapist would not provide. This information is used to increase understanding of needs and guide any recommendations.

What happens prior to a phonological assessment?

A phonological assessment can be carried out following an initial discussion, please see our process below.

Our process

At HSR Psychology we ensure that we meet the needs of children and young people. To achieve this we ensure that any specific assessments, intervention, or direct work, is only carried out following an initial discussion.

An initial discussion allows us to understand the background and your expectations of our involvement. Having an initial discussion ensures any services we provide appropriately identify or address needs.

Our process for any specific assessments, intervention, or direct work is as follows:

Step 1: Contact us

We will usually be contacted by the child or young person, parent or carer, or another professional (eg education or health).

You can contact us or complete a referral

Step 2: Arrange an initial discussion

An initial discussion allows us to understand the background and your expectations of our involvement. Arrange an initial discussion

What happens during a phonological assessment?

During a phonological assessment we will ask the child or young person to complete various speaking, listening and reading activities. These will allow us to identify areas of strength and difficulty.

Which phonological assessments do we use?

The assessments used will be chosen based on the individual. The main phonological assessments we use are:

  • PhAB2 - Phonological assessment battery measures; initial sound isolation, the speed of phonological production, rhyme identification, segmenting, phonological information, decoding ability, blending and phoneme separation
  • ERB - Early repetition battery assesses phonological processing and measures; children's recognition, recall and production of words, and sentence imitation
  • CELF - Preschool 2 - Clinical evaluation of language fundamentals - preschool assesses; phonological awareness
  • CELF 4 - Clinical evaluation of language fundamentals assesses; phonological awareness, naming, memory, sequences, word associations, language structure, language content

If we believe that a phonological assessment would be best carried out by our in house speech and language therapists then we would let you know during the initial discussion. The reasons for this may vary but it would usually be when the needs are complex.

What happens after a phonological assessment?

After a phonological assessment we will have a clear understanding of an individual’s phonological profile, which can direct future input. Future input may involve a referral to our in house speech and language therapists for further assessment or intervention.

Does a phonological assessment come with a report?

Reports are available upon request depending on your requirements. We provide a variety of report styles, from a summary report to a comprehensive report. Reports are a useful way to share findings or recommendations with other adults or professionals working with the child or young person. Learn more about the reports we offer.

A phonological assessment helps to identify any strengths or difficulties within the building blocks of speech. Understanding phonological needs can guide future input.
