Who could be suitable for a memory intervention?

Any young person between the ages of 3 and 25 could be suitable for a memory intervention at HSR Psychology.

Memory interventions are a possible course of action for young people who: 

• Often forget things
• Struggle with exams and tests due to memory difficulties
• Struggle in all areas of academic life
• Often lose track in difficult tasks
• Become frustrated when they forget when given information
• May be vulnerable to developing memory difficulties e.g. children born premature
• Have a diagnosed developmental condition e.g. dyslexia
• Find it difficult to keep up with or answer questions about something they have read

What are the benefits of a memory intervention?

Memory interventions with HSR Psychology are beneficial for the child or young person in a number of ways, including:

• Increased ability to remember and recall information through using strategies
• Equipping the individual with recall techniques
• Increased confidence 
• Reduced frustration in regards to recalling information
• Being able to recall what they have learned in different contexts
• The ability to complete tasks without losing track
• Improved progress in education 

Following a memory intervention we will provide some guidance for supporting the young person. Recommendations are useful for maximising the potential of the individual in other settings e.g. at home, in school.

What happens during a memory intervention?

During a memory intervention, the HSR Psychology specialist will often tailor memory training around the child or young person’s learning style and needs. The individual will usually learn recall techniques such as how to separate information like instructions, in order to remember chunks of information. The child or young person may also learn some planning techniques in order to organise complex tasks so that they are easier to keep track of. Memory interventions can involve different elements based on the individual’s needs. Memory interventions can take place in one of our clinics, at home, or in an education setting.

What happens after a memory intervention?

After a memory intervention the child will be able to utilise techniques independently to improve their memory skills. A follow up session may be suggested, if needed, following the memory intervention. After the intervention, we organise a feedback session to discuss outcomes. Outcomes can also be elaborated on in a written report if needed. You will receive support from us throughout the whole process of an intervention, including, offering you post-intervention support.

Does a memory intervention come with a report?

We always suggest we write a report for you following an intervention. This report will include; what happened and the impact of what happened, along with recommendations for the future. A comprehensive report is available after a memory intervention highlighting which techniques are the most effective for the individual based on their learning style. Reasons for requesting a memory intervention vary. If a report is not needed then we can give you feedback verbally along with a brief written summary. You can read about our reports further here.
