Whole college

A whole college approach includes implementing resources, policies, provision and training to benefit the college as a whole: staff and students. Long lasting college improvements can be achieved by embedding specialist input into areas of college life.

A whole system approach is needed focusing on prevention of mental ill health, early intervention and recovery. We owe this to young people. It is with their future in mind that we must all commit to, and invest in this challenge...Evidence shows that interventions taking a whole [college] approach to wellbeing have a positive impact in relation to both physical health and mental wellbeing outcomes, for example, body mass index (BMI), tobacco use and being bullied.

What would a whole college approach involve?

A whole college approach combined with input from a psychologist is very effective in the long-term and could involve many different aspects depending on the focus of your college. Below are some examples of what a whole college approach could include.

Improving mental health and emotional wellbeing

College students face immense stress during their studies and it is important to support their mental health and emotional wellbeing during this time. Government policies and legislation have recently recognised the importance of promoting a positive and healthy approach to mental health and emotional wellbeing within educational settings. A whole college approach for improving mental health and wellbeing could include updating policies and procedures to ensure that they are inline with new legislation and statutory requirements. Mental health and emotional wellbeing screening facilitates the early identification and intervention of needs, including at risk students. It is important to introduce coping strategies and encourage an attitude of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing within students and staff.

Raising progress

Raising progress and improving achievement through taking a whole college approach can take many forms, including data analyses, reviews of learning environments and finding out student’s opinions. Identifying learning needs and strengths within the college leads to an effective whole college approach targeted towards raising progress.

Addressing needs

A whole college approach towards addressing needs efficiently could take various forms. Needs can be addressed through training staff in working with specific needs and implementing internal or external resources. Regular groups may be created to address more needs now and in the future with a system in place for identifying needs.

Training

Our specialists can provide bespoke training packages on a whole college level to ensure that the training provided is relevant to students and staff. Training packages can include workshops, twilight sessions and external training events.
