Speech, language and communication assessments

Speech, language and communication relates to how an individual communicates and understands others. Speech, language and communication assessments explore both expressive and receptive language.

An expressive language assessment looks at how an individual conveys information, which could be through words, gestures and facial expressions. A receptive language assessment will look at how an individual interprets and understands the communication of others’ words, gestures and facial expressions.

What are speech, language and communication needs?

An individual’s needs relate to areas of difficulty within speech, language and communication. Speech, language and communication needs can be a combination of the skills and techniques an individual uses to communicate and understand, or an isolated aspect. Each child and young person with speech, language and communication needs will have their own strengths and challenges which we identify during our assessment.

Speech, language and communication needs can include:

Speech, language and communication needs are usually identified during childhood which facilitates early intervention. Our experienced team of psychologists are able to work with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs between the ages of 0-25.

[We] would expect 5-7% of all children to have specific speech, language and communication needs. However, we know primary schools only identify 2.3% of their population as having primary SLCN [speech, language and communication needs] overall, and secondary schools identify a worrying 0.7%. So, at every stage of schooling, there are opportunities to continue to identify those pupils whose SLCN are likely to affect their outcomes.

What happens after a speech, language and communication assessment?

After a speech, language and communication assessment, the option to purchase a written report is available which can be used within the home and education settings. We will review the results of the assessment and discuss with you the possibilities for using this information in the future. To support a collaborative approach to special educational needs and disabilities we would be happy to liaise with external professionals working with the child or young person. If a referral to a different professional, such as a speech and language therapist, is appropriate then we will assist you wherever possible, possibly through our in house speech and language therapists. It could be that an intervention is suggested as the next step, and in this case school staff, parents or carers and our team can all work together to achieve the best outcome for the individual child or young person. Read more about our reports and interventions.

Speech, language and communication assessments provide detailed information about specific aspects of speech, language and communication. Our educational and child psychologists look at the areas affected and possible underlying reasons to guide future support and provision.
